All principals of secondary schools in Elgeyo Marakwet County have been issued with performance contract forms and are expected to return them by this Friday despite a strong opposition from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).
TSC County Director, William Molla said the forms were distributed to school principals after being inducted on the same on 30th, December last year, adding that he expected them to return the forms by the end of this week.
He said all organisations both private and public had embraced performance contracting and teachers were no exception.
“As TSC we need to have a system in place to gauge the performance of our employees. All county directors have also signed the contracts”, he said.
However, the County Kuppet Chairman, John Chesergon has called on members from the county not to rush to sign the performance contracts.
Chesergon said the teachers should wait until they receive instructions from the union which he said was not consulted by the Teachers’ employer (TSC) before coming up with the contracts.
“TSC should consult with the teachers union before rolling out the performance contracting so that both parties can agree on which areas to look into”, the Chairman said.
He added that teachers should also be given time to study the contract before they are told to sign so that they are aware of what is expected of them and what to expect from TSC.
The Chairman regretted that the exercise was being implemented in a very hurried manner before all stakeholders are consulted.
