Kitui Governor Julius Malombe has said private companies have illegally acquired land belonging to the Agriculture department.
Malombe said on Sunday his government is investigating the circumstances under which the land was handed over.
He said fraudulent acquisition of public land is illegal and those responsible will be punished.
Malombe spoke at the Kitui Agricultural Mechanisation Services depot, where he inspected seven tractors recently bought for Sh25 million.
The governor was with Agriculture executive Joseph Kang’e and depot manager Dorcas Ileve.
Malombe said all the land belonging to government must be guarded to ward off grabbers.
“You must remain wary of grabbers who encroach on our land,” he said.
The tractors were acquired in line with the county food security policy, Malombe said.
