Kisumu Nurse in child theft case to remain in police custody

A nurse accused of stealing a baby in Kisumu will continue being detained at Kondele Police Station as police carry out further investigations.

Beatrice Mwanga, a nurse at Avenue Hospital reportedly absconded duty for several days before appearing at the facility with the new born baby whom she claimed to have given birth to.

Kisumu County Police Commander John Kamau said the hospital’s administration alerted security officers to investigate the matter since the nurse was not expectant before her disappearance.

They suspected a possible child abduction since the nurse had not shown any signs of being pregnant neither did she seek maternity leave as expected, said Kamau.

A medical examination conducted after the arrest, he added, failed to confirm that she had delivered.

The baby, he said, was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment and care as police carry out investigations to identify the parents.

Kamau said the information given by the nurse had gaps and appealed to members of the public to volunteer information to aid the police with investigations.

The information we have so far is not conclusive. She might have stolen or bought the child and that is what we are investigating, he said.

The court has given us five days to interrogate the suspect and take back conclusive evidence before the matter proceeds, he said.
