Butula’ St. Austin’s Kingandole Girls are upbeat ahead of the finals set for Kanduyi stadium in Bungoma County next month.
The girls’s soccer team will battle it out with three other teams for the regional trophy on February 3 and 4 before the winners proceed to the national finals slated for Nairobi in March.
Kingandole and Shinyalu Youth Academy will represent Football Kenya Federation-Western region branch while Chelebei and Bishop Njenga Girls will represent the North Western branch.
Speaking on Thursday during the team’s training session at the school, Kingandole head coach, Lawrence Akula said they are ready to bring glory to Busia County by qualifying for the finals in Nairobi.
Qualifying for the regional finals was no mean achievement. Our focus now is to beat former national secondary schools champions Bishop Njenga and regular campaigners Chelebei to win the regional title before repeating the feat at the national finals.
I started the Girls’ soccer team in 2010 after leaving Kolanya Girls. In 2012 we qualified for the provincial games where we sent shock waves to the reigning national champions Wiyeta who beat us 1-0 in the semis, Akula recounted.
Team captain Vivian Atieno said their major undoing though they hope for the best is lack of playing kits and shoes.
She said: We are optimistic of posting better results in the regional finals. We are in high spirits and we hope to overcome the challenges and win the regional and the national titles.
