Kilifi County government criticized for food shortage in the region

A Jubilee gubernatorial candidate in Kilifi County Mr. Gideon Mung’aro has criticized the County government for misusing funds allocated for agricultural projects in the region contributing to food shortage.

Speaking at Kwandomo ground, Malindi Sub County Wednesday, Mung’aro, who is also the Kilifi North Member of Parliament, said the national government allocated the region enough money for agriculture that was allegedly misappropriated, leaving residents starving.

It is embarrassing to see the people of Kilifi County dying of hunger when the national government has given the county money to produce enough food, said the former ODM legislator.

Magarini Member of Parliament, Mr. Harrison Kombe, echoed the same sentiments saying the region’s leadership has failed to equip farmers with modern facilities despite being funded by the national government.

The county received money to buy tractors and irrigation pumps but up to date farmers have not seen the equipment forcing them to use old farming techniques which cannot cater for the increased population, said Kombe.

Responding to the claims, Governor Mr. Amason Kingi said the County government bought over 30 farm tractors and distributed them to the constituencies and farmers are benefiting from them.

To plough an acre of land using the county tractors costs only Sh 1,500 compared to Sh 3,000 per an acre at market rate, explained Kingi, adding that inadequate rainfall was to blame for the food crisis in the country.
