KENYA’S ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AGENCY WARNS THOSE FLOUTING PLASTIC BAN

NAIROBI, The National Environmental Management Authority NEMA has warned that it will apply the full force of the law on persons found to be flouting Kenya’s ban on the use of plastic bags.

The authority recently conducted surprise raids at two major markets in the capital and arrested several traders who were found to be in possession of the banned bags. The raid by the NEMA officials at City Market and City Park Market caught some traders unaware.

Although the government made it clear last year that the use and manufacture of plastic bags had been banned, NEMA says some quarters have refused to obey the law.

Officials of the environmental agency experienced some resistance at the City Park Market resulting in one official being injured.

The authority claims that some cartels are behind an organized scheme to disobey the ban which came into effect in October last year.
