Kenyans on Wednesday celebrate the 53rd Madaraka Day to commemorate the day Kenya attained internal self-rule.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is leading the festivities at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, the first time ever to be held outside Nairobi.
Opposition Cord leaders Raila Odinga and Moses Wetang’ula have been invited to the event at Afraha before attending a planned rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.
Thousands were already seated at the Afraha Stadium early morning, while in Nairobi, crowds had already started gathering in readiness for the celebrations.
Police have been heavily deployed to both venues.
