President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured that all persons responsible for difficulties faced by Kenyan athletes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be punished.
In his New Year address to the nation, President Kenyatta said he had received the findings of the inquiry into Kenya’s Olympic participation which had two sets of recommendations including the criteria for team selection for major sporting events.
President Kenyatta also said that the Director of Public Prosecutions was reviewing the file in order to decide whether evidence exists to take further action against the top leadership of the Sports Ministry.
Kenyatta said the government had promised accountability and all persons responsible for the mess in Brazil must be held accountable.
The Kenyan team to the Rio Olympic Games faced grave challenges, including mistreatment in camp and in Brazil and until now only one National Olympic Council of Kenya official, first vice-chairman Ben Ekumbo, has been taken to court to face charges of theft of Olympic funds.
The Kenyan team won a total of 13 medals in Brazil — six golds, six silvers and one bronze.
