KENYAN PARLIAMENT APPROVES NEW CHAIRMAN OF IEBC

The National Assembly, the lower house of the Kenyan Parliament, has approved the appointment of Wafula Chebukati as chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Chebukati, who will be sworn in alongside the other seven Commissioners, is set to take charge at IEBC just seven months before the general election, which is scheduled for Aug 8 this year.

The other members of the IEBC are: Kibiwott Kurgat, Boya Molu, Abdi Guliye, Roselyn Kwamboka Akombe, Margaret Wanjala and Consolata Nkatha Bucha Maina.

The appointment of the Chibukati-led team comes at a time when the opposition has been pushing for former members of the IEBC, led by Chairman Isaac Hassan, to vacate office.

The seven Commissioners whose appointment come at a time when there has been so much acrimony over the recently amended election laws are expected to hit the ground running.

Among their other duties is to oversee the ongoing mass voter registration exercise.
