NAIROBI– The Kenyan government has imposed a 90-day dusk-to-dawn curfew in Mt. Elgon in Bungoma County in westernm Kenya following the continued insecurity in the area, says Interior Cabinet Secretary (Minister) Fred Matiang’i.
A major security operation will be carried out over the next three months to flush out criminals who have terrorized local residents for a long time now, he said Tuesday, adding that the security agencies have zeroed in on 17 individuals said to be behind the gang terrorizing the people.
For last two weeks, displaced families in Mt Elgon have been camping in primary schools after heavily armed attackers raided their homes. The brutal attacks have left trails of deaths dotting the once productive Mt Elgon region.
Matiang’i says the curfew will pave way for major security operations which will be carried out in the region.
The Minister, who has toured the troubled district, also issued a stern to one Mr. Cheparakat who he says is behind the attacks and a leader of the gang.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is threatening to pull out its members from the region saying their security can no longer be guaranteed.
