Coffee farmers from eastern Kenya have called for the full implementation of the Coffee Task Force Report which has already been forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Led by Meru Coffee Millers chairman Zablon Baabu, the farmers are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to roll out a plan for creating awareness of the Coffee Task Force Report. The farmers aere optimistic that once the report is fully implemented coffee farmers across the country will benefit.
Baabu differed with the position taken by the Council of Governors and a few farmers from Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties who had given a contrary opinion on the report. Cartels and rogue marketers in the coffee sector are opposed to the proposed recommendations of the task force and want to continue taking advantage of the coffee farmers, said Baabu.
Baabu pleaded with the Council of Governors and some coffee farmers who had taken their case to court to withdraw the court case in the interest of the farmers.
Let everybody in the coffee sector embrace dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure that contentious issues in the report are amended in order to improve coffee farming in the country, said Baabu.
The Vice-Chairman of the Lower Eastern Millers Association, Patrick Kitele, called on all Kenyans to support the implementation of the report, noting that farmers would stand to benefit.
