KENYA: TRADERS LOSE MILLIONS IN MARKET FIRE IN EMBU, ARSON SUSPECTED

NAIROBI, Nov 28 (NNN-KBC)–Traders in Kianjokoma market in Embu County are counting their losses after a fire razed down their businesses, destroying, millions of shillings in stock and infrastructure.

According to the market welfare association chairman Daniel Thiga Njeru, the market which is mainly dedicated to the popular “mitumba” -second-hand clothes- was destroyed in a suspected arson attack by robbers who wanted to cover their tracks after looting.

Njeru is distraught at the devastation which he says will be difficult to recover from for the market traders who have now been rendered vulnerable and destitute.

Most of the market traders had procured loans from various financial institutions to run their businesses.

They are angry at the Embu county fire department which they say failed to react in good time despite timely warning, leading to the large scale destruction. –NNN-KBC
