NAIROBI– Three Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials and one Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board officer were arrested by police in connection with trafficking of Mandrax capsules at the Eldoret International Airport.
Police managed to seize a huge consignment of Mandrax during the raid following intelligent reports that drugs concealed as vitamin supplements were frequently being trafficked at the airport.
The actual value of the 80,000 pellets is unknown.
The police suspicion and curiosity were aroused by the movement of the consignment, which was diverted to the Eldoret from JKIA.
According to Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Mongo Chimwaga, the drug might have originated from Dubai before landing to Kenya.
He said at least four officials, three from KRA and one from the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board have been arrested.
The importer of the consignment according to authorities was also nabbed in Nairobi.
The government in 2003 slapped a one-year ban on cargo planes at the Eldoret International Airport after suspicious deals were reported at the facility.
The nabbed cargo is presently at the hands of the anti-narcotics police.
