Villagers from Ngiluni in Mwingi, Kitui County, are in shock after a three-year-old girl was raped and dumped in a thicket on Saturday.
According to Ms Jacinta Joseph, a Good Samaritan who rescued her, the girl was repeatedly raped by two men who vanished immediately after committing the brutal act.
“I was going to town when I heard a child crying from the nearby bushes. I became curious and moved closer,” she said.It was then that she discovered that the three-year-old had been sexually attacked.
Ms Jacinta told the Nation that she found the girl at around 1pm.
“Even after committing the vicious act, the defilers left the helpless girl’s hands tied,” Ms Jacinta said.
She raised the alarm, attracting other villagers, who took the victim to a police station, where they were directed to take her to Mwingi Level IV Hospital immediately.
Speaking at the hospital, the girl’s grandmother said she had sent the child to call her mother, only to get information minutes later that she had been found raped and dumped in a bush.
“I wonder why these merciless men did such a brutal act to my grandchild,” Ms Kimanzi said as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Mwingi Central police boss Gerald Barasa, speaking on phone on Sunday, urged wananchi to share any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“It is hard for police to identify the suspects because they disappeared after committing the crime and the helpless young girl is incapable of identifying them,” Mr Barasa said.
He, however, gave a commitment to ensure that those responsible are arrested.
“I want to assure the affected family and the general public that we are doing everything possible to see the suspects are apprehended,” he stated.
Area MCA Kisio Kimanzi demanded quick action from police in apprehending the suspects.
Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich asked residents to be vigilant.
