Jubilee, Cord set for Malindi by-election

Jubilee and Cord are set to battle it out for the Malindi constituency seat in a by-election.

This follows the nomination of Malindi MP Dan Kazungu as Mining secretary on Tuesday during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet reshuffle.

Kazungu was elected on an ODM ticket.

There have been varied reactions to Kazungu’s appointment on social media with some praising the President while others say it is a “trick” by Jubilee to get votes.

The Coast is seen as a Cord stronghold.

Some Malindi residents criticised Kazungu’s appointment saying he did not deliver as MP and he might disappoint Uhuru.

Kakuyuni MCA Nixon Muramba, a critic of Kazungu, congratulated him and urged leaders to forget past differences and support the new CS.

Speaking in Malindi town on Wednesday, he said: “It is time for leaders to go back to the drawing board and identify a key leader who can provide development oriented leadership.”

“Malindi residents are lucky. It is the first time to get a cabinet secretary from their constituency,” he said.

Those expected to run for the Malindi seat include Kilifi women representative Aisha Jumwa, former MP Lucas Maitha and Phillip Charo, a banker.

Jumwa congratulated Kazungu but was mum on whether she will run for the Malindi seat.
