Join technical institutes to acquire skills, youth urged

The Director of Technical, Vocational and Education Training (TVET) Mt. Kenya region, Ms Margret Nduhiu has urged the youths to join vocational training centres to acquire technical skills.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of a three-day Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) exhibition held in Nyahururu town on Friday, Nduhiu said that the aim of the exhibition was to woe other youths to join the facilities.

The overall mandate of the exercise is to showcase our innovations for competitions, present the winner at the National level and also bring a positive impact about the TTIs to the general public, said Nduhiu.

Nduhiu who was the chief guest noted that the country cannot develop without TTIs as they focus in quality skills and career building and also provide an alternative to the higher institutions of learning.

(TVET) fairs were started to look for a way to market and create awareness to the community for our institutions, enhance innovation and research among students, she said.

She called upon the students in the TTIs to come up with problem oriented solutions in the innovations they come up with citing that Nyeri and Meru National polytechnics have come up with commodities that are being exported to markets in China.

Speaking during the same occasion, Nyandarua Institute of science and Technology Principal which hosted the event, Ms. Nancy Njui encouraged students to come up with projects that can generate income to boost the economy of the country, adding that vision 2030 is in the hands of the TTIs.

Njui called on the government to invest more in the TTIs to address issues of inadequate resources at the institutions.

The theme of 12th annual Kenya Association of Technical Institutes exhibition was achieving sustainable development through science, technology and innovation.

The Nyeri National Polytechnic that participated in the exhibition emerged position one winning four trophies.

Among the areas they won were Business, Automotive engineering, Building technology and Mechanical engineering.

Those who were among the top 3 in each department will be attending national competitions in Nairobi on April 5 to 7.
