INTERNET PENETRATION IN KENYA TO GROW EXPONENTIALLY

Internet penetration in Kenya is expected to grow exponentially following the setting up of an office here by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), its first ever regional engagement office in Africa.

ICANN is tasked with various functions raging from Internet Protocol address space allocation, Top-Level Domain name system management and root server system management.

Kenya boasts of having one of the most active online populations on the continent with its Internet penetration currently at 82.6 per cent. This number is, however, expected to increase exponentially with Kenya now being the host country in Africa for the ICANN.

The ICANN office is expected to open up the country to investors in the Kenyan cyber space in, among others, hosting of root services, data centres and cloud services.

Apart from the prestige that comes with the hosting of ICANN’s engagement office in Africa, Kenya is in a position to have preference in hosting more Internet domains that would go a long way into attracting more foreign direct investments.

This is expected to position the country well when it comes to matters developing internet policy across the world to the benefit of her citizens.

ICANN’S functions range from Internet Protocol address space allocation, Top-Level Domain name system management, to coordinating internet naming system through assigning unique address identifiers to computers by use of names and numbers.
