Internally Displaced Persons in Siaya County have accused the government of leaving them out of its compensation programme.
Speaking through their organisation, the Siaya IDP network, the IDPs who have been integrated in the community urged the government to accord them equal treatment as their counterparts from other regions.
They said they suffered during the 2007/2008 post elections violence that saw them uprooted from the affected regions.
The network chairman, Maurice Owino Opondo questioned the sincerity of Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaiserry’s statement that he only had a list of integrated IDPs from Kisii and Nyamira counties and none from the other counties within Nyanza region.
Addressing journalists after chairing the network meeting in Siaya town, Opondo said the list of his members was forwarded to Nkaiserry’s office through the Central Government Administration.
The cabinet secretary should look for other reasons but not that the government does not know of our existence, he said.
Flanked by the Network Treasurer, Rose Akinyi, Opondo appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and see to it that IDPs from Siaya also benefitted from the government resettlement programme.
The president has in the past two days, issued over shs700 million to integrated IDPs from Nyamira and Kisii counties who were affected by the post elections violence.
