Following the appointment of Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey as the Special Envoy on the Somali Refugee Situation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Before his appointment, Amb Affey was the IGAD Special Envoy to Somalia since 2013. According to a message for the UNHCR, he will now help to maximize efforts to search solutions for Somali refugees and asylum seekers at national and regional level and strive to enhance dialogue between Governments of asylum countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Yemen), Somalia and the international community to help maintain asylum for Somali refugees.
While congratulating Amb Affey for his appointment, the IGAD Executive Secretary, His Excellency Amb (Eng) Mahboub Maalim stated that it was a great honor to the region. The Special Envoy will also provide advice on how best to address protection concerns and identify appropriate solutions, with the aim of resolving the Somali refugee situation and engage with pertinent regional institutions, particularly IGAD and the African Union.
“We will support him in his new assignment of providing humanitarian and development resources for the reintegration of Somali returnees in a manner consistent with Somali national development plans and regional priorities”, pointed out H.E Amb Mahboub adding that IGAD will also utilize this opportunity to enhance its migration program.
The IGAD Executive Secretary wishes Amb Affey all the best and looks forward to continuing working with him.
