The ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (MOICT) Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru Tuesday said the Department of Information can make an impact in the country by leveraging the opportunity it has in information dissemination.
Mucheru was appointed ICT Cabinet Secretary in November following a cabinet reshuffle that saw President Uhuru Kenyatta drop five Cabinet Secretaries who had been implicated in corruption.
He took over from Dr. Fred Matiangi who was transferred to the Ministry of Education.
And Tuesday, the former Google’s Regional Lead for Sub Saharan Africa and Country Manager for Kenya said the Department can make a huge impact in the lives of the over 40 million Kenyans by taking a lead role in championing for their right to information.
“The Department has power to impact on the lives of the more than 40 million Kenyans through its personnel spread across the 47 counties,” said the C.S
“If we modernize and leverage the opportunity that we have we can play a critical role in the development of this country,” he said.
“Let us use all forms of communication to receive or send information, be it SMS, whatsapp or other online platforms,” explained Mucheru during his familiarization visit to the directorate.
In addition, the C.S promised to act on the various challenges facing the department which range from under staffing to technical and technological challenges.
“I am aware of your concerns, but I will not dwell onto all of them at the moment but I promise you something will be done,” said Mucheru.
The C.S was accompanied by Broadcasting &amp;amp; Telecommunications Principal Secretary Sammy Itemere and his ICT &amp;amp; Innovation counterpart Victor Kyalo.
