A woman is recuperating at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after her estranged husband severed off her hand on Monday.
The victim, Edna Kemuma separated with her husband Evans Kengere Manyansa, 25, six months ago and went to her maternal home in Gucha South following incessant domestic violence according to neighbours.
However, on Monday Kengere reportedly sneaked into his in-laws home and convinced her to meet him only to descend on her with a sharp machete and in the process cut off her left hand and inflicted severe injuries on her other parts of the body.
I had just arrived at my parents’ home with vegetables from the market when I received a call from my husband to come out of the house and I obliged oblivious of what awaited me, Edna told the press from her hospital bed.
Kemuma said her once dear husband of six years also robbed her of her cell phone and fled leaving her helpless.
And despite inflicting severe bodily harm on the 21 year old mother of one, Kengere is reportedly roaming freely and going about his daily chores at his home in Masagege village, Etago, Gucha South Sub County unperturbed.
The Kisii County Director of Health Services, Dr. Geoffrey Otomu said the victim was responding well to medication and was out of danger.
Dr. Otomu decried rising admissions at the referral health facility resulting from domestic violence and urged young people to seek advice from elders on how to cope up with marriage challenges.
Josphine Mokeira, the victim’s mother, condemned the attack and appealed to the police to apprehend and prosecute the man.
She also appealed for assistance from the government and well-wishers to care for her now disabled daughter and grandchild.
