Metropolitan girls’ lawn tennis team romped into the semi-final of the Kenya Secondary Sports Association’s Term 2B national Championships at Machakos Boys yesterday.
Stephanie Mbaya and Faith Nyabera registered 100 percent wins in the singles to assure themselves places in the semi finals. Mbaya defeated Nelly Neema of Lake region, Miriam Kawira (Highlands) and Diana Kyalo (Coastal) in pool A, as Nyabera beat Priscillah Adhiambo, Zipporah Kimanzi (Highlands) and Patience Pendo (Coastal) to sail to the semi finals.
Mbaya has been pitted against Nzoia’s champion Ricada Ajema in the semis whereas Nyabera meets face Ruth Shilalu from Aberdare region. On her way to the semis, Shilalu beat both Lavin Grace from Nzoia and Neema from Nzoia and Lake Regions respectively. Ajema trounced Marion Njeri (Aberdare) and Kyalo in Pool ‘B’ to advance.
In the doubles, Metropolitan’s Judith Nkatha and Achu Madhieu cruised to the round of four having won all their group matches. Nkatha and Madhieu beat Nuru Ali Salim/ Zuhura Ali Salim; Sadra Mukui/ Belinda Njeri and Scholar Chepkirui/ Getrude Tuei in pool A in sets of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2 respectively. They will face Aberdare’s Doris Ciku/ Rose Wanjuhi in the semis who also beat all their opponents.
In the other semis, Lake region’s Monica Werimo/ Sally Oketch will lock horns with Mau’s Chepkurui/ Tuei. Werimo/ Oketch hammered Uniter Moraa/ Ruth Baraza and Ciku/Wanjuhi in identical sets of 6-3 as Chepkurui/ Tuei beat Nuru/ Zuhura and Mukui/ Njeri in Pool ‘A’ to finish second.
