Kangundo Central Member of Machakos County Assembly Moses Mitaa Thursday called for the return of hospital boards in charge of managing health facilities.
Speaking to the media , the MCA decried the continued suffering of patients at health institutions, citing lack of drugs among other essential equipments.
Mitaa said cases of patients being referred to buy drugs and other medical related products and procedures have necessitated the call to reintroduce the boards.
These boards will run hospitals where revenue collected will be ploughed back to the facility, unlike taking it to the county headquarters where little or no money comes back.
The MCA expressed disappointment saying it is very sad to pass budgets with huge allocation to the health sector and lack essential drugs and equipments in the same sector.
Mitaa was speaking following downing of tools by medical practitioners from Machakos level 5 hospital Thursday.
The practitioners and their assistants are protesting poor working conditions at the facility, following lack of essential drugs, anaesthetics and broken machines which have gone unrepaired for months now.
Machakos level 5 hospital is the biggest referral hospital in the lower eastern region, serving four counties of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado.
Health which is one of the big four agenda of president Kenyatta identified Machakos out of other three hospitals in the country to pilot the affordable universal health care programme for all in line with Kenya vision 2030 and the global sustainable development goals which commenced in August 2015.
