laikipia county should employ youths to ward off wild animals from farms in Laikipia West subcounty, an MCA said on Thursday.
Despite adequate rain, there are dim prospects of a good harvest because wildlife destroy crops, Githiga MCA Peter Thomi said.
Speaking in the assembly, Thomi said last year elephants and buffalo destroyed the crops of hundreds of farmers in Mwenje, Rubere, Ndindika and Wangwachi.
Thomi, who is the public accounts and investment committee chairman, said the affected farmers have not been compensated.
“These farmers still have crops in their farms this year and are at a risk of facing the same fate unless the county government takes the necessary measures,” he said.
Ol Moran MCA Dann Ndegwa faulted the county government for not budgeting for the erection of an electric fence in the Wangwachi-Mwenje area to keep wildlife off farms.
