The Tana River Governor, Hussein Dado has called on security officers to speed up investigations into the murder of a County Assembly driver and the subsequent killing of gunmen believed to be Al-Shabaab militants.
Dado said there were still many unanswered questions surrounding Mohamed Funani’s murder and urged the police to provide the answers to the bereaved family, friends and relatives.
Funani was murdered in cold blood by gunmen who waylaid him as he drove from Garsen to Hola town at about 2.00 am last Friday morning.
On Monday, three gunmen believed to be the ones who had shot the driver dead were also gunned down in Wayu area and preliminary investigations indicated that they could have been members of Al Shabaab.
Tana River County Commissioner (CC), Oningoi Ole Sosio said on Tuesday that the suspects were found with literature that pointed them to the dreaded terror group.
Funani was a member of the Orma community and his murder had started taking a political dimension and triggering bad blood between the community and the Wardei, who are in different political camps.
Sosio said those shot dead were members of the Somali community who seemed unfamiliar with the terrain as they bumped into an Orma-dominated area where National Police Reservists and security officers gunned them down following a shootout.
Two G3 rifles with five rounds of ammunition, two magazines, a compass, two exercise books with Al Shabaab literature and a jungle uniform were recovered.
The suspects had two exercise books which had Arabic prints. They also had some information regarding the route they were to take from Ijara through the Hola Airstrip to Madogo near Garissa Town.
The CC said officers from the Anti-Terrorism Unit in Malindi had been called in to analyse the literature and equipment found on the suspects to ascertain whether they were from the terror group.
During the celebrations, Sosio called for calm as security agents investigates the two incidents.
During Thursday’s function was also addressed by Deputy Governor, Jire Siyat and Galole Member of Parliament, Hassan Dukicha.
