The battle for the Embu County Gubernatorial race, less than three weeks to the general elections has narrowed down to a war of words with two contenders castigating the incumbent, Governor Nyaga Wambora of employing corruption practices to bribe his way back to the hotly contested seat.
Public Sector Management consultant, Kithinji Kiragu and former PS in President Kibaki’s Administration, Dr. Cyrus Njiru separately accused Wambora of presiding over newly found corruption vices over the last two months for purposes of raising campaign funds.
This trend of corruption in Embu has continued un-abated, even less than three weeks to the election. The anti corruption agency, EAAC are currently investigating fresh loss of nearly Sh.300million through dubious tenders over the last three months,Kithinji claimed.
Addressing his supporters at Kangaru shopping centre in Embu on Sunday, the gubernatorial aspirant, seen as a real threat to Wambora quest for a second term accused the Governor of duplicating projects and programmes that are under National Government agenda to pave way for avenues of tenders meant specifically to siphon funds.
He cited as examples the Embu -Kibugu road which is part of the National Government Embu County Ring Road project and street lighting project in Embu Town as among those that have been initiated purely for purposes of siphoning funds.
The much hyped milk feeding project estimated to cost Sh. 400million according to Kithinji is another monumental corruption initiated project to steal public funds.
Instead of empowering dairy farmers to strengthen their capacity to produce, Wambora has resulted to buying milk from out-side the County at exorbitant prices, he observed adding that Embu dairy farmers can produce enough milk for consumption and export if empowered.
On his part Njiru called on investigating agencies to move with speed and unravel, reported rampant practices of corruption in the County, saying wastage of public funds in Embu has reached unprecedented levels that must now be contained.
He pledged to unravel a strong team of ten technocrats who will help him redeem Embu County if elected Governor. He was addressing his supporters at Mbuvori market in Manyatta Sub-County on Sunday.
Other contenders for gubernatorial race include, Senator Lenny Kivuti and a businessman, Leonard Muriuki.
