GARISSA, KENYA, Residents of Garissa County in eastern Kenya who wish to travel by air to other places can now do so following the launch of the first flight to the county capital of the same name Monday.
The Freedom Airline flight which carried its first passengers to Nairobi will be operating on Mondays and Fridays. According to Shillow Abukar, the manager of the airline, he decided to venture into the aviation business following numerous requests from local residents.
Speaking to the media after seeing off the first group of travellers, Shillow said the airline would be consistent and urged the residents to travel by air saying that it was faster and more affordable.
I am really encouraged by the big number of those who had turned up to travel on the first day (17 in number). I am optimistic that going forward, we will have a much bigger number who will fill the plane, said Hillow.
Buses normally charge 1,000 shillings (about 9.70 US dollars) and take six hours to travel the 360 kilometres from Garissa to Nairobi while the air fare is 5,000 shillings.
Shillow said that the airline plans to make the flights daily depending on response from passengers.
