Focus on talent development

Leaders in Kisumu County should support sporting activities as a way of nurturing talent among the youth, the Executive Member for Information, Communication & Technology (ICT), Michael Onyango has said.

Onyango said the youth should change their attitude and embrace sports as a career path with huge potential for growth if given the necessary support.

He was speaking at the Annual Sports Tournament dubbed Muhoroni Annual Football Tournament held at Nyakoko primary school also graced by Kisumu Governor, Jack Ranguma.

The Executive Member revealed that Kisumu county government will establish centers for nurturing sporting activities with the hope of transforming the lives of millions of young talented sports men and women.

Onyango commended Kisumu county Sports Ambassador, Joseph Okello for the tremendous efforts and work aimed at realising this dream alongside Makini schools, Airtel and Safaricom among other corporate organizations.

The tournament sponsor, Ken Okello said Premier League teams like Gor Mahia, Western Stima and Muhoroni FC have been some of the beneficiaries having scouted for some of the outstanding players to join their ranks.

However, he decried incidents where some soccer fans took advantage of security lapses to cause chaos and mayhem that drives away potential sponsors who hoped to invest in the development of sporting activities organized in a peaceful environment.

The tournament saw Masogo United beat Miwani 4-2 to clinch the title after the two teams tied on 3-3 draw when the 90 minutes of regular and extra time elapsed. Amilo FC took position 3 with Ombeyi FC in 4th place.

Masogo subsequently bagged Sh55, 000 with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams receiving: shs.35, 000, shs.25, 000 and shs.20, 000 respectively as well as uniforms and trophies donated by Governor Ranguma and the sponsor Okello.
