Floods sweep away a Boda Boda rider

Police in Taita Taveta have confirmed that a boda boda operator was Tuesday swept away by raging floods as heavy rains continue to rein havoc in the area.

The 26-year old rider drowned as he tried to cross a flooded river at Wumari Sechu village in Mwatate Sub County.

Area OCPD Francis Mwangi observed that the deceased was riding from Bura Station to Wumari Sechu village at the time of the tragedy.

The rider was trying to cross a river that has burst its banks and was swept away. His body and motorbike were recovered 100 meters away downstream, said Mr Mwangi.

The death brings to six the number of people who have so far been killed by floods that have also left a trail of destruction.

The police boss appealed to residents living along hill slopes and valleys to move to safe grounds to avert possible deaths. He warned against crossing running water, saying it would easily wash them away.

I am at the same time urging wananchi to stay indoors during any heavy downpour, and to avoid the use of electronic equipment that may attract lightning during such moments, concluded Mwangi.
