Floods displace 50 Taveta families

Fifty families spent the night in the cold after heavy rains pounded Taveta subcounty. mThe floods at Kitobo sublocation worsened after heavy rains in Tanzania on Tuesday.

Several houses in Taveta were submerged and 100 people displaced, residents said. Mary Kileta yesterday told the Star on the phone their crops and other property were swept away.

“We are calling upon Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations to come to our rescue. If the rains continue, we don’t know what will happen next,” she said.

In Voi, five families spent the night in the cold after their houses were submerged at Sofia village. Msambweni village in Voi has also been damaged after raging waters destroyed several houses.

Part of the standard gauge railway line at Caltex junction in Voi has been cut off. Several roads in Taita Taveta county are impassable as they are flooded following the downpour that began on Sunday evening.

The road to Kasighau has also been cut off at Miasenyi. On Sunday, a woman drowned at Maungu as she crossed a flooded gully.

Taita Taveta Human Rights Network chairman Haji Mwakio expressed fears of waterborne diseases after pit latrines in Mangu were submerged.

“We urge the public health department to be on the lookout,” he said. County commissioner Oningoi Sossio cautioned residents against crossing flooded rivers and gullies.

“It’s sad that we lost one person in the rains on Sunday,” he said. Sossio said the state has taken emergency measures.

“We have enough security personnel who will attend to those affected by the floods if the rains continue,” he said.
