Five police shot dead as Al Shabaab attack police camps in Mandera

Five police officers have been confirmed dead and three others were injured after suspected Al Shabaab gun men attacked two police camps at Fino about 50kms from Mandera town.

The dead included four Administration Police Officers (AP) and a National Police Reservist (NPR) while the injured were two regular police officers and a National Police Reservist.

The heavily armed militia who according to security sources numbered about 100 attacked the camps at mid night on Thursday.

Lafey Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Erick Oronyi said the Al Shabaab destroyed a Safaricom mast before attacking the two police camps.

The gunmen destroyed the Safaricom mast to curtail communication before attacking the two police installations, said Oronyi.

Oronyi who was speaking on phone to KNA said the injured are receiving treatment at Fino dispensary awaiting to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

The incident took place five kilometers to the Somalia border after the militants crossed on foot through the porous border.

This is the third time the Al Shabaab have attacked security installations in Lafey Sub County.

Two weeks ago the Rural Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) killed two KDF soldiers 10 kms from last night’s attack scene in what security sources said the later confused the RBPU officers with Al Shabaab.

The region has experienced enhanced security for the past one and half years with only the Wajir incident where three teachers were killed at Qarsa primary school about two weeks ago.
