Department of Agriculture in Mumias West Sub-county has received 21, 499 two kilogram packets of certified seeds from the County Government of Kakamega for sale to farmers in the area.
The farmers would buy the seeds at a subsidized price of Sh200 per two kilogram packet as compared to stockists in the town who are selling at between Sh400 and 450 per the same packet.
Sub-County Agriculture officer Mr. Joseph Wasike said that the County government has also disbursed 6, 000 25kilogram bags of planting fertilizer to the sub-county for sale to the farmers.
Wasike told KNA in his office Tuesday that the fertilizer was selling at a subsidized price of Sh900 per bag and that most farmers were turning up at the office to buy as they embarked on planting activities.
He said that most farmers in the area had prepared their farms early ahead of the rains that have started pounding and were now planting their main crops that include maize and beans.
He noted that the farm inputs would go a long way in improving the food security of the area as farmers were expected to harvest close to 25 bags of maize per acre if they observed the planting rules effectively.
