Thirty families spent Sunday night in the cold after fire burnt their houses at Ichuga village, Nyeri County.
The fire that broke out at around 8.30pm left no injury. However, property worth thousands of shillings went up in smoke as nothing was salvaged.
According to victims, the fire was caused by an electric fault but Kieni East Police boss Michael Mbaluku said the cause was yet to be established.
Though the village is near Nanyuki town, the villagers claimed town’s fire engine arrived a whole hour later hence nothing could be saved.
We are only two kilometres from Nanyuki Town, yet the fire fighters arrived an hour after the fire had erupted and consumed the 30 timber houses. We appeal to Laikipia County Government to ensure that the fire fighters respond promptly when alerted, Michael Karanja who estimated his loss to be over Sh200, 000.
It has been observed that fire fighters live in their homes, instead of being stationed at accessible points, which makes them to take time to respond to fire breakouts such as Monday night’s incident.
A pledge two months ago by Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi to put up a fire station for quick response was yet to be fulfilled.
