Exams uninterrupted in Turkana attack

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator (RC) Wanyama Musiambo Wednesday dismissed reports that Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination ((KCSE) materials were lost in an attack in Turkana that claimed lives of three police officers and an education official.

Musiambo said security personnel and a Teachers Service Commission official were travelling in a convoy of two vehicles when they were ambushed between Kapedo and Lomelo at Kasarani area. The incident occurred Wednesday shortly before 4pm.

Speaking to KNA the RC clarified that the TSC official had not been assigned duties in the ongoing KCSE exams but had hiked a lift in the convoy that was headed to Kapedo to replenish food rations for officers at an administration police camp.

We want to set the record straight that the slain education official was in his private engagements when he sought a lift from our officers before the fateful incident. The exams are going on uninterrupted and all papers that have been done by candidates are in safe custody, he affirmed.

Sections of the media had earlier reported that the bandits fled with examination material following the ambush.

Musiambo described the attack as unprovoked, as the officers were not on a combat mission but were returning to their camp after delivering food supplies to their colleagues in Kapedo.

RC confirmed that two officers died on the spot while a third one succumbed to gunshot wounds while undergoing treatment at Lomelo health centre.

He further stated that the bandits escaped with three firearms that had been assigned to the slain officers.

The RC confirmed that one officer sustained injuries and has been airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

We have dispatched a chopper, the General Service Unit (GSU), and the Quick Response Team (QRT) to pursue the bandits and recover the stolen firearms. We will not relent until the suspected culprits are brought to book, he said.

Musiambo said the state had constituted a team headed by Turkana County Commissioner to coordinate collection of any relevant information that will help root out criminal elements in the area.

The slain officers and their colleagues were stationed at Lokerio sub county headquarters of Turkana East.
