Residents of Elgeyo Marakwet will have to wait longer for a fire engine after it emerged that funds set aside for the same had been reallocated to salaries.
The Chair Finance and Planning committee, Wilson Cheboi told the assembly that the previous assembly had allocated Sh.31.5 million for the purchase of a fire engine in the 2016/17 financial year.
The chair said a tender was awarded to ACE motors but they delayed to supply the equipment beyond the stipulated time of the contract claiming the cost had gone up and therefore they could not procure the same.
Cheboi, who was responding to a statement by Kamariny ward MCA, William Cherutich said the tender could not be awarded to the next bidder as they had given a quotation of Sh. 49.5 million.
The current assembly, Cheboi said had intended to provide funds for the same in the supplementary budget for the current financial year, but was unable due to financial constraints occasioned by increased wage bill for doctors and nurses.
The funds for the fire engine were therefore reallocated to cater for the increased wage bill, Cheboi who is also the MCA for Embobut/ Embolot ward told the house.
He gave an assurance that the county will prioritize purchase of the same in the 2018/19 financial year.
He however, said the budgeting process was yet to commence as the county was in the process of developing the 2018-2022 County Integrated Development Plan CIDP.
Residents in the county have been calling on the county to buy a fire engine as they have been suffering loses whenever there is a fire incident as fire engines have to be called all the way from Eldoret.
