Scores of farmers in Endoo ward are counting losses after their Mango and Banana farms were destroyed by Elephants.
One of the farmers Wiliam Suter said elephants have been camping in their farms for the last three days destroying mango and banana trees.
He said apart from destroying their farms, farmers were living in fear because the animals were dangerous to the community.
The Elephants destroyed farms in Kowow, Kasugut and Sangach villages in Endoo ward at the border between Marakwet East and Baringo, he added, calling for the officers in Kenya Wild Life Services (KWS) to intervene.
According to Agricultural Extension Officer in Endoo ward, Benjamin Sum, the elephants have extensively destroyed the farms but the exact cost of damages has not been ascertained as he was still assessing the extent of destruction.
Sum who spoke to KNA on phone from Sangach in Marakwet East on Friday said he has advised the farmers to report the matter to the police and record in the OB so that he can make a report basing on the police report.
I have told the farmers to follow the rightful procedure in reporting the destruction so that they can access compensation from KWS, said Sum.
Elgeyo Marakwet County KWS warden, John Ngalia said he has send KWS officers to the area to assess the damage and to drive away the elephants from the farms.
He said National Police Reservists officers together with the KWS officers will be working together to drive away the elephants.
