Eastern Region Ball Games Kick-Off

The Makueni County governor, Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has challenged secondary school students to make sports a hobby in order to avoid contracting lifestyle diseases.

Prof. Kibwana said that students should participate in games to avoid contracting ailments like diabetes, high blood

pressure and stroke among others.

He urged the learners to value sports and compete fairly, saying it should be an everyday activity.

The governor made the remarks during opening of the Eastern region secondary school ball games in Makueni boys’ high School on Wednesday.

At the same time, Kibwana reminded the students that they need to be disciplined for them to make good sportsmen and sportswomen.

Compete fairly and have in mind that even if you happens you lose, there is still victory in defeat because you now ask yourself what led to your defeat, and when you correct those things, you become a winner next time, said Prof. Kibwana.

The regional event will take place for 4 days with teams from the 8 Eastern Region counties namely, Makueni, Machakos, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Marsabit, and Kitu i participating.

The various categories of sports that will be taking place include football, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis and

badminton.

Speaking at the same event, the Eastern Region Director of Education, Patrick Khaemba said that sports can transform the learners to be better citizens and also get good earning jobs through extra-curriculum activities.
