Residents of Likuyani Sub County have been cautioned against selling their dry maize at throw-away price.
Matunda Sub Location Assistant Chief, Joseph Shikuku asked the farmers in the area to be wary of unscrupulous middlemen who are buying maize at Sh. 50 for a 2-kilogrammes tin translating to a 90-kg sack selling at Sh. 2250.
He advised them to wait and sell their produce to the National Cereals and Produce Board depots which would soon open their silos to receive maize at a better price.
The administrator observed that the same traders would after a few months return to sell the product at three-fold the buying price.
The assistant chief appealed to the agricultural officers in the Sub County to regularly sensitize farmers on the best commercial practices to reap better returns.
He also encouraged the farmers to join cooperative societies to market their produce as a group.
