Narok County Women Representative, Ms. Soipan Kudate, has given Sh. 1.2million through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund to sponsor ‘Desert Wheel Chair Race’ in the County.
Speaking to the press, Ms. Kudate confirmed that the race will involve 70 athletes, both men and women living with disabilities from all the Sub-counties in the County.
The race was aimed at creating a team that would be the torch bearers of Narok County in the Annual Desert Wheel Chair Race that will be held in Kajiado in July 13th to 15th.
The initiative is aimed at enabling the disabled people to enhance their talents and make our County proud, said Kudate.
The County Director of Sports, Mr. Benson Kariuki, confirmed that a total of six athletes, three men and women each qualified for next month’s race.
We will be represented by six athletes in Kajiado and I believe we will be victorious, the director said.
Among the winners was Mercy Nasiae, who topped the 2016 edition of the ‘Desert Wheel Chair Race’ in Isiolo. She was grateful for the help the National Government had provided.
We are very thankful for the funds and we promise to be victorious like last time in Isiolo, she said.
Others winners included Kaare Saruni and Nora Chesimet who emerged winners during the qualifiers.
The Chairman of People Living with Disabilities ( PLD) in Narok County, Mr. Tokore Lepore and Chairlady Paralympics Narok County, Ms. Grace Silantoi, both thanked the government for helping the group to exercise their talents.
Ms. Silantoi asked the government to make close follow-up on the disabled who are talented in sports to ensure they earn from their talents.
Narok County disabled athletes are the defending champions in the ‘Desert Wheel Chair race after an impressive performance last year in Isiolo, where they took the first two positions in the race.
Narok is one of the first counties to hold the ‘Desert Wheel Chair Race’ through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund.
