Turkana County Deputy Governor Peter Lotethiro has called on road construction companies to involve the local community and its leaders in important decision making to avert conflicts during implementation of projects.
In a meeting with China City officials involved in construction of the Lodwar-Lokitaung’ road, the Deputy Governor said public engagement was key for smooth implementation of the project.
He urged the company to involve local leaders and community representatives such as chiefs, ward administrators and Members of County Assembly in important decision making for communication to reach the locals.
The meeting followed protests by residents who accused the construction company of discriminating against locals in employment opportunities.
The Deputy Governor also said the youth and women ought to be given priority during recruitment of staff especially for unskilled and semi-skilled jobs.
However, China City’s Public Relations officer Rose Dorori informed the Deputy Governor that the company employs at least 70 percent of its staff from the local community and assured of plans to hold meetings with local leaders to address concerns raised by the community.
She said the company was committed to equipping its employees with skills to assist them even after completion of the project.
The construction company has pledged to undertake corporate social responsibility projects along the road that will include water boreholes in each ward and conversion of barrow pits into water pans.
Deputy Governor Lotethiro assured the company of the County Government’s support.
