A Standard four pupil was killed by a crocodile in Mara River in Mararianta area in the famous Maasai Mara National Game Reserve Sunday evening.
Area OCPD Mr. Anthony Shimoli said the girl who has been identified as Naitutae Nabaala, 12 of Ewalata Academy had gone to fetch water from the Mara River at around 5pm when the crocodile attacked her.
Efforts by the members of the public to the rescue the girl from the jaws of the crocodile failed as the crocodile pulled her into the water and fed on her body, Shimoli said.
Security and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel were still at the scene to attempting to salvage any remains of the girls body from the river by the time of going to Press.
There has been an increase in incidences of human-wildlife conflict in the area that borders the famous Maasai Mara National Game Reserve where several lives have been lost in the recent past and others injured by wildlife, bringing to the fore the ever-thorny issue of human-wildlife conflict in the county and the country at large.
Last week, a Maasai Moran stunned residents after he killed a lioness that had mauled his 105 goats worth Sh. 1 Million at Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the Maasai Mara Game reserve.
Earlier, a Standard Five pupil was also killed by a crocodile in Mara River in Transmara West as they went swimming with his friends as an elephant also mauled and injured a 54-year-old woman at Nkineji village near Sekenani area in Narok South.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Narok County Senior Warden Mr. Dickson Ritan has termed the incidences as unfortunate and urged the families of the deceased persons to be calm as the incident is being investigated with a view to compensate it.
