County To Recruit 300 ECDE Teachers

Turkana County Public Service Board is in the process of recruiting 300 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.

The board chairman Dr. John Ng’asike said the recruitment is meant to address staffing gaps in the sector. The deployment will bring the number of ECDE teachers in the region from 271 to 571.

Ng’asike emphasized the importance of ECDE to growth of the education sector in the county. They are the foundation of education, we must ensure the centres have enough teachers, he said, adding, the teachers will be deployed equally to the various ECDE centres in the county.

Meanwhile, Governor Josphat Nanok said the county government was carrying out appraisals on 151 ECDE teachers who are on contract.

The performance report will be forwarded to the Public Service Board to consider the well rated teachers for a permanent offer. The rest will still continue to be on contract until we are convinced they have performed to our expectations, said Nanok.

In 2018, there were 26,023 ECDE children across the county who are on transition to grade one in 2019.

And through the partnership with the World Food Program, some 240 ECDE centres in the county are going to benefit from improved energy saving jikos.

The improved jikos will enhance minimal use of fuel, save on time as well as improve cooking hygiene, Nanok said.

Meanwhile, six vocational training centres across the country are bound to benefit out of the grant of Sh26.3 million from the national government. About 500 students are set to benefit from this grant with each of them receiving Sh 15, 000.
