The Vihiga County Governor, Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has promised to empower youth through sports development during his first term in government.
Ottichillo made the assurance on Wednesday at Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga town where he joined Vihiga United Football Club players who were on a training session.
Accompanied by former Governor, Moses Akaranga, he said, I will restructure and ensure the Ministry of Youth, Gender and Social Services is adequately funded to enable it initiate projects aimed at economically empowering the youths.
The governor disclosed that the largest chunk of funds allocated to the Ministry would go towards sports development.
My government will invest heavily in youth talent, scouting and nurturing, said Ottichilo, who encouraged county youths to identify and engage in various sporting activities.
He reiterated that one of his administration’s immediate key projects was construction of a county stadium which would meet national standards.
We will procure adequate land for construction of a stadium here at Kidundu which would meet national as well as international standards, stated Ottichillo.
The governor further revealed his government would construct mini-stadia in all the five sub counties.
He praised Akaranga for the support provided to Vihiga United FC during his tenure in office.
Ottichillo assured the players they would continue to receive support from the county administration.
The former governor urged the players to enhance their academic statuses by enrolling into post-secondary institutions.
The club provided what has been described as shock results after it edged out Tusker FC from the GOtv Shield before it made to the semi-finals.
Vihiga trounced Tusker FC by 2-0 merited goals at Nyayo Stadium last Sunday. Tusker FC was the title defenders.
