Kilifi County government will begin a program that will cater for hospital bills of the most vulnerable families by paying for their National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
The County Secretary, Arnold Mkare, said they have opted for the alternative way of helping the families reeling in poverty to easily access medical services.
Mkare said, this program, when ready, the County government will foot the medical bills of those who cannot raise the Sh.500 NHIF monthly contributions by relieving many patients the burden when they recover and get discharged.
Addressing mourners during the burial of his aunt, Mrs. Rachael Birya at Tezo village over the weekend, the county secretary said his office is planning for a meeting with all the local Members of Parliament and MCAs to discuss the way of funding the program.
Mkare was responding to the County NHIF branch manager, Omar Mwatabu’s statement who said only intervention of the county government would save ailing families from being harassed in hospitals due to medical bills.
