County Government Moves To Curb Post-Harvest Loses

The Trans Nzoia County government has bought two state of the art mobile driers that will help farmers cut down post-harvest loss.

The driers will supplement two others bought by the National government that will help maize farmers dry their cereals especially during the on- going rains.

The County Executive in charge of Agriculture, Mary Nzomo said on Monday in her office that at least the driers will reduce the-post-harvest losses caused by poor drying from 30% -40% to 10% loses.

We have also constructed a modern ware house and the national government also handed to us another one that will help maize farmers access better storage facilities, she said.

Other measures taken by the county government also include sensitization of farmers on the proper drying to avoid aflatoxin and also use of modern post -harvest technologies that include hermetic bags and metal silos that don’t require use of chemicals for storage.

Nzomo noted that once post- harvest losses are reduced, the country will achieve food security.

According to Nzomo, post -harvest losses has been a contributing factor to low farm incomes and thus denying farmers extra earnings.

The CEC encouraged farmers to adopt proper pre harvest practices by turning to modern technology.
