Taita Taveta County athletics team is the overall champion of the coastal region athletics competitions, 2017 edition.
Speaking while handing over the trophies to the county Governor, John Mruttu, Tuesday, Athletics Kenya Taita Taveta County chair, Kisalu Kimoni, said that the team’s performance was exemplary.
The team scooped junior men and women categories, senior men and women and the newly introduced 4 by 2000m relay, a performance that saw us take home the overall champions trophy, said Kimoni.
Kimoni also thanked the County Government for their continued support for athletics and facilitation of the event for the past four years.
County Sports Director, Leonard Otieno, congratulated the team but challenged them to focus on the national championships to be held in June 8-10 where the team to represent Kenya in the World Championships will be selected.
We have supported the teams by providing sports gear, accommodation and other facilitation. The team should pull up their socks to shine on national level, said Otieno.
Governor Mruttu commended the efforts by AK team members for their engagements that have brought glory to the county.
The tremendous achievements of the County athletics team for the past years is attributed to harmonious operations by AK officials, athletes and other crucial stakeholders in addition to thorough preparations prior to the competitions, said the governor.
He added that the county is blessed with untapped talents which stakeholders were ready to exploit and nurture it.
Mruttu revealed that tenders for the improvement of the Danson Mwanyumba stadium had been opened and the construction would start any time from now.
