A prison van ferrying a man accused of being a member of a terror group was yesterday targeted for ambush by unknown people.
The van was ferrying Sheikh Ali Khalid to Mombasa law courts from Shimo La Tewa prisons when they were almost attacked.
State prosecutor Daniel Wamotsa told High Court judge Martin Muya they received intelligence that an attack had been planned to ambush the officers ferrying Khalid.
Khalid was accused of being a member of al Shabaab and police said they recovered two hand grenades and a stolen vehicle.
Wamotsa said the attack was meant to harm the prison officers and taking Khalid away.
He said the accused could not be produced before court since he had been taken back to Shimo La Tewa for security.
Wamotsa asked the court to order the case be heard at Shanzu law court yesterday afternoon so as not to risk the lives of security officers and Khalid’s.
“We risk losing him if the incident happens again.”
