Community elders counter Ukur Yattani’s rejection bid

A section of elders from Isiolo County have come out strongly to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet nominee from Upper Eastern Amb. Ukur Yattani.

The elders, led by former Irehaboru civic leader Mr. Mohamed Nura and Gabbra Council of elders Chairman Mr. Omar Godana, have come out boldly to support the nomination and thanked President Kenyatta for honouring his election pledge.

We are gathered here as elders and opinion leaders, thanking the President and his Deputy for nominating Ukur Yattani as a Cabinet Secretary and congratulate the Jubilee Administration for being elected into office for a second term, said Mr. Nura.

The elders rubbished a press conference by Marsabit leaders which they noted had already triggered division among the Upper Eastern communities.

They condemned the elected leaders for ganging up against the appointment of Amb. Yattani to the cabinet, terming it as disrespect to the Head of State who is the Appointing Authority.

The elders described Amb. Yattani as a career leader who has risen through the ranks from DO, DC, Assistant Minister, Ambassador and recently Governor of Marsabit County and that leaders who are against him are those who can only survive in politics through dividing communities along ethnic lines.

We as a community believe that Amb. Yattan will not disappoint Kenyans and shall deliver. We also think that the only person in comparison to the Ambassador is the likes of Dr. Matiang’i, said Mr. Godana.

The elders appealed to the President to consider appointments of Principal Secretaries from Isiolo since the region has backed him since 2002 when he first contested the presidency on a KANU ticket.

They said that President Kenyatta and Kibaki regime has assisted and initiated a lot of development and employment of locals to senior government positions and pledged to support his favoured candidate in the next elections.
