Chuka dumping site a health risk – residents

Residents of Kabururu near Chuka town have said they want a dumping site relocated as it poses a serious health hazard.

They said it has a stench and many insects that may cause disease outbreaks.

The rubbish, a few metres from the Embu-Meru highway, blocks the road to Chuka County School.

Residents urged the Tharaka Nithi government to relocate the dumping site or they will go to court.

Resident Mbaka Gitonga said the site is also a security threat as street urchins hide there and often attack and rob residents at night.

“We also suffer airborne diseases when we inhale fumes when the waste is burned,” he said.

Chuka Igambang’ombe public health officer Adan Wako on Monday said with the rains, the waste could cause waterborne diseases.

“I am following up on a letter I wrote to Chuka town administrator to relocate the dump site,” he said.
