Boys Soccer Final Aborts in Nyahururu

A boys’ final soccer match between 2015 national secondary schools champions Passenga and Olbolossat aborted following a dispute.

Olbolossat players boycotted the game at the Nyahururu stadium on Saturday after the referee yellow carded a Passenga defender and allegedly allowed the offending team to take the resultant kick, instead of awarding a penalty for Olbolossat.

The defender and his goalkeeper had jointly tackled Olbolossat striker, Simon Karanja causing him an injury.

Olbolossat players expected a penalty from the incident saying it happened inside the box.

What reason did the referee have to show yellow card to a player and allow the same player to take the kick for that offence, wondered Olbolossat coach Francis Muhambe.

The match was one of the term two B zonal ball games of the Aberdare region. The zonals brought together Nyandarua, Kiambu and Kirinyaga counties and winners will meet counterparts from Murang’a and Nyeri zone in Nyeri in two weeks’ time.

Passenga reached final by beating Broadways of Thika 3-0 in one of the semi-final while Olbolossat beat Kabonge of Kirinyaga 3-1 in the other semis.

In the girls’ soccer final, Njabini hit Passenga 2-0 with both goals being scored in the second half.

Njabini romped into the final by white washing Kiburu Girls high school from Kirinyaga 5-0 in the semis while Passenga Girls beat Kerugoya Girls, also of Kirinyaga, 3-1 in the other semifinal.
